The FTSE rose 69.7 points, or 1.1%, to 6432.1p.

Kazakhmys rose 96 points, or 7.04%, to 1459p. Antofagasta rose 42 points, or 5.97%, to 745p. Tullow Oil rose 32.5 points, or 5.3%, to 645.5p. Friends Provident rose eight points, or 5.02%, to 167.5p. Vedanta Resources rose 82 points, or 4.35%, to 1969p. Northern Rock fell 12.8 points, or 8.42%, to 139.2p. Alliance & Leicester fell 21 points, or 3.04%, to 669p. Sainsbury fell 12.75 points, or 2.99%, to 413p. British Airways fell 8.5 points, or 2.25%, to 368.75p. Smith & Nephew fell 13 points, or 2.25%, to 566p.
