FTSE ends on a sweet note

The FTSE 100 index gained 90.6 points or 1.6% to 5,678 points today, led by sugar and sweeteners maker Tate & Lyle as it reported better-than-expected profits.

Tate & Lyle topped the risers, gaining 5.62% to 564p, after reporting a better-than-expected underlying profit before tax, amortisation and exceptional items of £295m. Miners were back in favour with investors today as metal prices managed gains. Kazakhmys rose 5.44% to £10.76, Rio Tinto gained 3.14% to £29.24 and Anglo American advanced 2.88% to £20.74. Barclays rose 1.18% to 601.5p after it said it performed strongly in the first quarter and expects full year income, impairment and expenses to be "significantly" ahead of expectations.
