FTSE steady as miners drop

The FTSE 100 index is almost unchanged in early trading, with a small rise of just 0.8 points to 5,878, as miners lead the fallers one the back of copper prices dropping.

Commodity stocks are the biggest drag on the index with Vedanta Resources down 2.82% to £12.06, while Rio Tinto has slipped 1.82% to £24.75, and Kazakhmys has dropped 1.53% to £12.24. Xstrata is also down 1.39% to £22.01, closely followed by Antofagasta which has slipped 1.26% to 449p, however steelmaker Corus is performing well with a rise of 1.08% to 372.75p. Standard Chartered bank is currently leading the risers with gains of 1.58% to £13.46 as brokers raised its rating from ‘neutral’ to ‘buy’, closely followed by Morrison supermarkets which is up 1.55% to 229.75p.
