Miners give FTSE boost

The FTSE 100 has ended the day up 29.7 points, or 0.49%, to 6,030.9, with Shire leading the advance.

Drug developer Shire climbed 14.94% to £10.08 after it announced it had received an approval letter from the US Food and Drug administration for their new attention deficit drug NRP104. Miners also performed well with Lonmin up 4.92% to £26.02, closely followed by Kazakhmys which added 4.69% to £11.39, while Vedanta Resources climbed 4.46% to £12.65 as metal prices rose, while Severn Trent also gained 4.59% to £14.82, after its waste management arm Biffa, demerged from the group today.
