The FTSE 100 index lost 41.2 points or 0.7% to 6,042 points by close of business today after a poor start on Wall Street.
Royal & Sun Alliance fell 0.89% to 139p after it said it continued to make progress across the group in the first quarter with its targets still well in sight. International Power dropped 3.08% to 298.5p. The power giant said its business has enjoyed a very strong start to 2006, citing a much-improved performance from its European operations, but shares fell on investor profit-taking. Meanwhile, Lehman Brothers has upgraded life insurer Friends Provident to “overweight” from “equal-weight”, taking its shares up 1.83% to 194.75p.
