Equity release schemes are a £1.2bn market, up 50-fold since 1993 according to research by Mintel.

A survey of 1,918 adults aged 18 and up during March found that 11% of homeowners have released equity in their property. Extrapolated that suggests about 2 million homeowners have done this , Mintel says. About a fifth of homeowners who have not done so previously say they may do so in future, the research suggests. Mintel says the propensity to carry out equity release will be driven by factors such as rising life expectancy, falling state pensions, and lacking company and personal pension provision.
