FTSE has a healthy finish

The FTSE 100 Index rose 52.40 points, or 0.9%, to 5,930 points today, led by medical devices group Smith & Nephew.

Smith & Nephew jumped 7.12% to 462.75p after it issued a better-than-expected statement saying it had seen an improvement in the second quarter. Fund manager Amvescap gained 4.14% to 522.50p, saying it has seen a slight improvement in funds under management while first half profits soared 60% to $355.9m. Aerospace firm Rolls-Royce advanced 5.04% to 442.75p after it said it continued to make good progress, despite a weak US dollar and higher raw material costs.
