FTSE tracks Wall Street gloom

Shares in London recovered in the afternoon after a major sell off in early trading, with the FTSE 100 closing down 34.9 points (0.63%) to 5,470.7.

Liberty International shares added 50.5p (5.34%) to 995.5p, while WPP Group gained 15 points (3.05%) to 506.5p. Ferrexpo shares dropped 23.5p (8.77%) to 244.5p as commodity prices dipped and Enterprise Inss lost 19.25p (5.65%) to 321.50p Wall Street trading improved after a poor Monday, with the Dow Jones index adding 34.92 points (0.31%) to 11,421.17 in early trading. JP Morgan shares climbed 0.77 (2.13%) to $36.90, while AIG gained 0.34 (1.81%) to $19.12, though investors remain concerned about the economic outlook.
