Mining stocks sees FTSE turnaround

In the UK the FTSE 100 Index has picked up about 13 points to 4,840.50 points this morning, led by mining firms including Corus.

The Steel firm is up 1.75p to 51.50p. Antofagasta, BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto have added 22p to 11.67p, 11p to 664p and 27p to 16.49p respectively. Old Mutual has also picked up 2.75p to 129p. The financial-services firm says it may sell stakes in its businesses worth 7.2bn rand to black investors and staff. Associated British Foods meanwhile has retreated 18.50p to 748p. In Japan the Nikkei Stock Average advanced for the first time in more than a week, adding 1.2% to 11,065.86, ending a 7.9% at its close early this morning.
