In the UK the FTSE 100 Index has added a fraction of a point to 5,045, led by Allied Domecq after newspaper reports that French competitor Pernod Ricard has held talks with Fortune Brands on making a joint offer for the firm.
Allied Domecq has picked up 17p to 538.50p this morning. Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance has added 1.25p to 87.75p, while mobile operator MM02 has picked up 1.75p to 123.75p. Man Group meanwhile has lost 14p to 1,436p, with Anglo American also down 12p to 1,313p. In Tokyo stocks advanced after Tokyo Electron reported ‘strong’ sales of equipment to the region's chipmakers. The Nikkei 225 Stock Average increased a further 0.7% to 11,632.20 by early Saturday morning, its biggest climb since the beginning of July.
