In the UK the FTSE 100 Index of leading shares has rallied closing 11 points up to 5337.80 after a it of turbulent day.
Leading gainers Scottish Power hit a new 52-week high on a further report that Germany's E.ON is looking to buy the company, while companies tied to the home-improvement sector continued to struggle. Scottish Power closed up 21.5p to 554p. Travis Perkins closed down 83p to 1,475p after it said retail comparable sales were off 7.4% in July and August. The company also reported a first-half profit rise of 8.3% to £74.5m. In the US The Dow Jones was closed for Labour day IFAonline
