Energy boost pushes FTSE to new high

The FTSE 100 has ended the day up 15.1 points, or 0.25%, to 6,172.4, to hit a new five and a half year high despite a poor performance from British Energy.

However energy firm Drax posted the biggest gains of the day with a rise of 4.56% to 813.5p, as investors switched into other stocks in the energy sector after British Energy fell 23.82% to 427p, on news crack in its boiler pipes are worse than expected. Meanwhile miner Lonmin climbed 4.07% to £28.13, closely followed by Morrison Supermarket which jumped 2.99% to 258.5p, while Sage group added 2.11% to 254.5p and International Power increased by 1.73% to 338.5p.
