MARRIED COUPLES could be disadvantaged by changes to tax legislation from December to accommodate new laws recognising gay and lesbian relationships, says the Daily Telegraph.

The Inland Revenue has confirmed, from December, the rule will change to accommodate the new Civil Partnership legislation - which allows gay couples the same tax breaks as married couples by signing up to the "civil partnership document". This means older married couples will see the couple's allowance based on the income of the highest earner, rather than the husband's income, leaving some married couples will be worse off.
