FTSE holds its ground

The FTSE 100 index gained about 13 points at one stage this morning to 4,346, despite continued pressure on stockmarkets around the world.

Royal & Sun Alliance added 2.25p to 83.25p as the insurance sector staged a slighty comeback. BHP Billiton gained 5.5p to 490.5p after sayign it wouls spend $1.4bn on digging up more nickel to meet strong demand from China - the metal is a key ingredient in making stainless steel. British Airways climbed 1.5p to 261.25p after the market digested figures overnight showing airline traffic continues to grow compared to similar periods last year. SABMiller added 5.5p to 621p after reporting rising sales in its home market South Africa, as well as Europe and Asia. Stocks dropped in ...
