The FTSE 100 index gained about 13 points at one stage this morning to 4,346, despite continued pressure on stockmarkets around the world.
Royal & Sun Alliance added 2.25p to 83.25p as the insurance sector staged a slighty comeback. BHP Billiton gained 5.5p to 490.5p after sayign it wouls spend $1.4bn on digging up more nickel to meet strong demand from China - the metal is a key ingredient in making stainless steel. British Airways climbed 1.5p to 261.25p after the market digested figures overnight showing airline traffic continues to grow compared to similar periods last year.
