John Hutton, the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, has confirmed the decision to extend the funding for the Financial Assistance Scheme was a result of the rulings in two recent court cases brought against the government.
In the Written Ministerial Statement, Hutton says the decision to increase the FAS fund from £2bn to £8bn was “the result of my reflection on the implications of the High Court ruling in the judicial review of the government’s decision to reject the Parliamentary Ombudsman’s findings of maladministration by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)”.
