CI claims highlight lack of consumer knowledge

Consumers are still uncertain of the circumstances when a critical illness policy pays out, suggests new claims data from Scottish Widows.

Details of the Edinburgh-based life insurer’s claims paid and unpaid reveals 18% CI claims were turned down in 2005 – a reduction from 20% in 2004 – and the bulk of these (58%) were because the claim did not meet the policy definition. At the same time, however, more work still needs to be done to ensure policyholders disclose as much medical information as possible ahead of signing up to CI cover, as 41% of claims were rejected on the back on non-disclosure. Other circumstances in which consumers did not receive payouts include policy reaching its end of term before the illness started...
