Shell and BP helped the FTSE to a 6.6 points gain today meaning the index of 100 leading UK shares closed at 4,369.20.
Shell gained 5p to 401p, while BP added 2.5p to 489.5p. Rexam, the drinks can maker, added 5.25p to 419.25p on analyst upgrades, with speculation growing the company will report strong earnings and profit growth from its Latin American operations. Amvescap dropped 4p to 269.25p on news its Invesco unit is in talks with US regulators over the size of the penalty it may have to pay for allowing illegal after-hours trading in units of its mutual funds there.
