Miners drag FTSE into pit

London's markets were dragged down by falling mining shares, which failed to lift as the day wore on. Shortly before 4pm, the FTSE100 had dropped 186.83 points, or 2.54% to 4,101.72.

Vedanta Resources saw 10% wiped from shares, while Kazakhmys dropped 9.89% to 211.75p and Lonmin lost 9.54% to 753.5p. HBOS shares fell back slightly after Lloyds TSB shareholders approved a takeover of the ailing bank. Stock is currently up 8.73% to 68.5p in late trading. Markets were particularly volatile on Wall Street this morning, with share prices swinging wildly as investors took account of rising commodity prices and the ailing car industry.
