FTSE earns well

The FTSE 100 Index rose 27 points, or 0.5%, to 6,037 points today, led by a steady stream of earnings by companies such as ICI.

ICI gained 6.69% to 394.75p as it said it started the new year well, with first quarter underlying profit up 8% and the outlook for the rest of the year remaining positive. Rio Tinto advanced 3.91% to 3,190p after it said in its AGM economic growth will continue the positive trend of 2005 even if rates of growth slow down. Anglo American added 1.31% to 2,400p and Antofagasta advanced 3.06% to 2,456p. Property group Hammerson gained 1.69% to 1,202p as it decided to elect for Reit status to take effect at the beginning of 2007 if this year's Finance Bill proposals are enacted substan...
