Mixed UK stocks force FTSE down

The benchmark FTSE 100 has so far lost about 15 points to 4,490 after UK stocks commenced this monring's trading on a mixed note.

Lloyds TSB fell 7p to 429.5p. The bank said its net interest margin, which measures the profitability of lending, shrunk to 2.97% in the first quarter from 3.03% in the second half of 2003. Royal & Sun Alliance rose 3p to 84p after the insurer yesterday revealed it is in talks to sell its UK life-insurance business. In Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index gained 218.08 points to 11,600.16 earlier today, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 22.51 points to 11,833.04.
