Friends Provident stays strong on FTSE close

The FTSE closed this afternoon at 6624.4p after rising 39.2 points, or 0.6%.

Friends Provident stayed strong today amid merger talks with insurer Resolution, rising 14.6 points, or 7.83%, to 201p. Antofagasta rose 27 points, or 3.67%, to 763p. Barclays rose 21.5 points, or 3.01%, to 735p after raising its bid for Dutch bank ABN Amro to £45.4bn. Legal & General rose 4.1 points, or 2.71%, to 155.3p. Anglo American jumped 81 points, or 2.55%, to 3257p. British Land dropped 41 points, or 3.1%, to 1314p. Home Retail fell 8.25 points, or 1.83%, to 441.75p. Segro fell 10 points, or 1.7%, to 578p.
