FTSE gains offset Tate & Lyle sugar shock

The FTSE 100 is up 13.4 points, or 0.22%, to 6,231.8 in early trading, with miners among the stocks offsetting the effect of Tate & Lyle's profit warning.

BHP Billiton is up 1.25% to 928.5p, closely followed by Kazakhmys which has gained 1.24% to £10.65, while supermarket chain Sainsbury is up 1.38% to 440.5p, and bank Northern Rock has climbed 1.65% to £11.73. However Wolseley is posting the biggest gains with a rise of 2.15% to £13.78, which is helping to offset Tate & Lyle which has plunged 15.42% to 609p, after it warned pre-tax profit is likely to be “modestly below” market expectations following poor demand for its key product Sucralose. Meanwhile Unilever is down 1.86% to £13.73, closely followed by Vodafone which has fallen 1.17% ...
