Ministers reject calls to alter age laws - papers 6th March

Calls from employers and the insurance industry to amend age discrimination laws to prevent the costs of insuring older workers against death and long-term illness from soaring have been rejected by ministers, reports the Financial Times .

Employers had warned increased premiums for workers staying beyond normal retirement age would force them to reduce benefits for all employees or stop them from employing older staff. Age discrimination rules, introduced in October to bring Britain into line with a European Union directive, prohibit employers from offering staff different terms and conditions based on their age.
