The FTSE 100 Index closed 43 points, or 0.7%, higher at 5,856 points today led by talk Novartis is lining up a bid for AstraZeneca.

AstraZeneca gained 4.35% to 2,832p. Royal & Sun Alliance was also a top riser, gaining 1.59% to 127.50p, after it reported a strong set of final figures after a "very good" year. The insurer registered a better than expected operating result of £698m. Sector peer Aviva gained 1.33% to 799.50p after UBS raised its share price target to 810p from 740p. BAE Systems was 1.32% higher at 421.75p following a report in The Guardian, which said EADS is lining up a bid for the UK group’s 20% stake in Airbus.
