FTSE falls on selling

Three-quarters of FTSE 100 constituents are down so far today, sending the index down about 15 points to 5,012.

Dixons leads the rout, down 3p or nearly 2% to 156.25p after analysts at CSFB downgraded their view of the stock on the basis of evidence UK consumer spending is slowing down. United Utilities dropped 5p to 611.5p after announcing its Vertex business is buying Marlborough Stirling for about £95m or 42p per share. GlaxoSmithKline is down another 12p to 1,216p as investors continue to shy away from poor recent newsflow. WPP, the advertising group, is down 4.5p to 619.5p after overnight completing its acquisition of competitor Grey Global in New York. Xstrata, the biggest coal expo...
