Partygaming drags FTSE lower

The FTSE 100 has ended trading just short of its worst levels for the day, down 71.2 points or 1.2%, to 5,858.1 as PartyGaming led stocks lower.

The internet gaming site plummeted 9.81% to 105.75p, after smaller AiM-listed rival Sportingbet announced its chief executive had been detained in the US, while ITV also slipped 3.79% to 101.5p. Mining stocks also featured among the biggest fallers, with Anglo American down 3.61% to £22.43, closely followed by rival Xstrata which ended the day down 83p, or 3.43% to £23.35. Elsewhere Yell Group was the best performer with gains of 7.32% to 572p, after the Competition Commission said it would likely allow the directories group to raise its prices in 2008.
