Older employees to continue working despite Heyday case

More employees will continue working into their old age, despite yesterday's decision by the European Court of Justice in support of compulsory retirement at age 65, according to Watson Wyatt.

On Thursday, European judges decided forced retirement at 65 did fulfil a legitimate social goal as part of the 'Heyday' test case. Currently, employers are able to force employees to retire once they reach their 65th birthday, though they are not required to. Supporters of the rule say it allows older workers to be removed from the workforce in order to allow younger and less experienced employees in.
