Statements from drinks maker Diageo on ‘difficult' European sales have pushed the FTSE 100 index down about 3 points to 4,498.

Diageo is down 27.5p to 656p after sales of vodka fell. Whitbread is down 29p to 787.5p after the owner of Travel Inn hotels reported earnings that fell short of analysts’ expectations. British Airways is off by 2.75p to 222p after chief European competitor Air France reported strong growth in earnings and profit on growing passenger numbers. BAE Systems is up 3.25p to 208.25p after analysts at Deutsche Bank raised their share price target.
