Power losses darken FTSE early

Utilities have switched off in morning FTSE 100 trading, with the index currently down 49.9 points, or 0.78%, to 6344.

International Power leads the way; pre-tax losses of £53m caused its price to plummet 19.25 points, or 4.28%, to 430. Standard Life has not fared so well also, it has fallen 12.5 points, or 3.67%, to 328.5. BAE Systems’ increase in half-year profit has seen it move 12.75 points higher, or 2.92%, to 449. Diageo is also doing well, up 23 points, to 1058; while a strong morning announcement for Schroders has led it to an 18 point morning jump, or 1.58%, to 1157.
