FTSE keeps steady footing

The FTSE 100 index declined a fraction this afternoon but pulled back to close almost flat at 4717.7 points, supported by a late rally from Associated British Foods

ASB eventually picked up 16.50p to 730.50p by close of business in London, while Yell - the online business finder - closed up as much as 20p to 390p after reported a first-half profit against last year’s loss. Mining group Xstrata capped off a good day, closing 13.50p up to 882.50p. Rival mining firm BHP Billiton showed good gains with 8.50p to 569p, even though the company reported it doesn’t foresee China's interest-rate increase affecting demand for its raw materials after all.
