FTSE closes in on third week of gains

Currently up about 14 points to 4,790, the FTSE 100 index should close up over the full week to make it three in a row and putting it within fighting distance of the key 5,000 points level by year-end.

The latest gains mean the index is up a tad more than 45% since its March 2003 low. BSkyB has today jumped more than 8%, or 45p to 577p after reporting a greater than expected increase in quarterly subscriber numbers. Reuters is up 6.5p to 395.5p as the stock continues to feel the effects of investors betting on its results being geared to the wider stock market recovery, particularly in regards to US sales to financial services clients. Pearson, owner of the FT, is likewise up 10p to 633p. Intercontinental is up 9.5p to 679.5p after an upgrade to the stock by analysts at Deutsc...
