FTSE unchanged at start of week

The FTSE100 has lost less than a point to 6121.70 so far in morning trading as stocks including BHP Billiton and Kazakhmys rose after the price of copper climbed to a two-week high in Shanghai. BAE Systems has paced declining shares as the pound strengthened against the dollar.

BHP, the world's largest mining company, has gained 12p, or 1.25%, to 975p. Kazakhmys, Kazakhstan's biggest copper miner, has added 8p, or 0.7%, to 1,152p. BAE Systems, Europe's biggest weapons manufacturer, has dropped 11.5, or 2.9%, to 392p. The pound has risen to its highest in almost two years against the dollar, reducing the value of earnings that companies make overseas. BAE gets about 39% of its revenue from the US and Canada. Corus, which is the subject of a takeover battle between Tata Steel and Cia. Siderurgica Nacional SA, has dropped 3.75p, or 0.7%, to 501.25p. The company h...
