In the UK, the FTSE 100 Index has shed a couple of points to close at 5,041.80 points, led by Cairn Energy.

The oil explorer lost 28p to 1116p, while Hilton Group lost 6p to 318.50p. Allied Domecq, the distiller, advanced 11p to 532.50p after a newspaper report that French competitor Pernod Ricard held talks with Fortune Brands on making a joint offer for the company. Consumer packaging firm Rexam added 9p to 454.25p. In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has stared poorly shedding about 9 points to 10,787 points. Hewlett-Packard, losing $0.69 to $20.61, is pacing the New York benchmark, along with Johnson & Johnson down $0.66 to $65.94 and American Express, down $0.45 to $54.74. ...
