FTSE gains on metal, rocks

Surging metals prices today helped mining companies lead the FTSE 100 index up 31.70 points to 4,430.40 by the close.

Xstrata gained most, adding 33.5p to 691.5p. BHP Billiton climbed 17.75p to 463.25p. Friends Provident led the insurers, gaining 3.75p to 146p after weekend rumours it will become subject to a takeover bid, sparking consolidation in the insurance sector. Centrica added 3.75p to 211.5p as investors bought in ahead of results due later this week. BP likewise added 5.75p to 426.75p ahead of results due tomorrow. British Airways climbed 1.5p to 289.5p after beating expectations by reporting a jump in profits on trans-Atlantic routes. Vodfone gained 0.75p to 135.5p after confir...
