Severn Trent pulls FTSE lower

The FTSE 100 index is down in early trading by 17.2 points, or 0.29%, to 5,969.4, with Severn Trent leading the index lower.

Supermarket chains are performing poorly today, as Tesco is down 5.25p, or 1.38%, to 374.75p, closely followed by Sainsburys supermarket which has dropped 1.11% to 356.75p. AstraZeneca is also one of the biggest fallers with a drop of 1.22% to £33.87, while water company Severn Trent is the biggest drag on the index with a fall of 1.5% to £13.11. Elsewhere, SABMiller is trying to help the index rally with gains of 1.27% to £10.76, while mining firm Kazakhmys has added 1.48% to £13.06 following the recent rises in copper prices.
