Poor health is the main reason for people retiring, according to research by Skandia.
Half of the people surveyed said ill health had forced them to retire while just 3% stopped working because they could afford to. Almost 20% retired because they did not want to work anymore while 10% received an early retirement package and 8% became redundant. Only 7% retired when they did because they had reached state pension age. Almost 85% retired before reaching state retirement age but 46% of those did not choose to retire when they did.
