Trading helped the FTSE 100 index keep its nose slightly above the 4,800 level closing 9.20 higher at 4,803.10 points.
The UK benchmark was led by MM02 as the mobile telecoms firm picked up 1.50p to 107p. Cadbury Schweppes saw its shares gain by 5.50p to 466p after US firm Wrigley, the world's largest maker of chewing gum, agreed to buy the Altoids mints and Life Savers brands from Kraft for $1.48bn. Alliance UniChem, the distributor to chemists, increased 8.50p to 682p. Emap, a publisher, shed 25.50p to close the day on 811.50p, leading the losers after reports it might lose ground when it announces first-half earnings tomorrow.
