FTSE upbeat this morning

Man Group has got off to a flyer this morning helping the FTSE 100 benchmark to an early gain of about 15 points to 4,599 points.

Man is trading up 25p at 1,302p. Shire Pharmaceuticals is up 19p to 540.75p. The U.K.'s third-largest drugmaker said the US Food and Drug Administration approved its Fosrenol treatment for kidney-failure patients with estimated sales of $200m. Companies performing poorly include British Sky Broadcasting, down 4.25p to 491.25p. Centrica is down 2.25p to 236p. Japanese stocks rose earlier this morning, led by financial companies including Resona and Shinsei Bank after report first-half profits were ahead of forecasts.
