BA keeps FTSE flying

The FTSE 100 has ended the day up just 9.7 points, or 0.17% to 5,888.30, despite reaching earlier peaks of over 5,900 as Wall Street opened weakly.

British Airways was the day’s best performer with gains of 4.08% to 414.25p, on the prospect of lower fuel prices after US light crude extended yesterday’s sharp decline to below $70 a barrel. However oil stocks were down in sympathy with BP down 2.06% to 593p, and Shell slipping 1.65% to 1,843p, while miner Anglo American ended the day the worst loser with a fall of 3.31% to 2,280p. Elsewhere aerospace groups were in demand with Rolls-Royce up 3.14% to 435.75p, and BAE Systems gaining 2.89% to 373.5p, while GlaxoSmithKline added 1.8% to 1,467p following reports suggesting it should see...
