Insurers give FTSE boost

Despite a poor start earlier in the day, the FTSE 100 index has ended the day up 44.7 points, or 0.76%, to 5,895.5, with insurers among the biggest risers.

Old Mutual was the best performer of the day with gains of 3.91% to 166p, ahead of its interim results which will be released on Thursday, while Legal & General gained 2.65% to 135.5p. Also among the big risers, cruise operator Carnival added 3.62% to £24.33, closely followed by defence firm BAE systems which gained 3.35% to 385.5p, while Centrica jumped 2.81% to 319.75p. On the down side, energy shares provided the biggest drag with International Power down 1.78% to 303p, closely followed by British Energy Group which slipped 1.16% to 641p.
