The story of 1998 in the protection industry was that this usually recalcitrant sector started to actually innovate en masse, largely independent of each other. In no particular order, there was Click, Fortis, PruProtect, LV=, Unum and Canada who between them launched a range of products including Real Life Cover, EAP and Class.
