I am confident you are aware of the quote from Lord Jenkins of Hillhead, the former Labour Home Secretary, who said that: “Inheritance Tax is, broadly speaking, a voluntary levy paid by those who distrust their heirs more than they dislike the Inland Revenue.” I, of course, agree and in this ­article I want to concentrate on one particular area of IHT ­planning – the use of the ­transferable nil rate band (TNRB) for married couples and civil partners.
