During the year to 1 November 2004, funds investing locally into UK-based smaller companies have outperformed their large-cap counterparts. This has now been true in three out of the last five years - only in the bearish years of 2001 and 2002 did funds investing into large or mid-caps outperform smaller companies funds. The average return of the UK smaller companies sector was around 24% compared to the 18.8% mean performance of the large-cap sector, and of the 10 best performing funds over 2004, four were smaller companies funds.
