Some suggest China resembles Japan of the 1970s before the Nikkei shot from 1,500 to 40,000 over 10 years. But if they are right, then why use a long/short fund to enter the market?
Equity investments into Japan have the capacity to multiply investors money fourfold over the next 20 years, according to some commentators, however, some see China's fortunes as multiplying allocations by up to 20 times. Jacques Mechelany, managing director of Heritage Fund Management, a sub-adviser to the 788 China fund, says: "At the end of a bull market everyone becomes a specialist. Talking to fund managers in 1989, they were all experts on Japan, but talking to them in say 1999, they were experts in technology and I believe that in 2009, they will all be experts on China."
