This year is the 50th anniversary of the formation of what is now the European Union (though it can claim roots in even earlier international "co-operative ventures"). The original members of the club were Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and Netherlands. Membership expanded as follows: 1973 Denmark, Ireland, United Kingdom 1981 Greece  1986 Portugal, Spain 1995 Austria, Finland, Sweden 2004 Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia 2007 Bulgaria, Romania Currently Croatia and Turkey are negotiating "joining te...
