Every year in the UK, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs in around one to three in 1,000 people in the general population. This ranges from less than one in 3,000 in people under the age of 40. One in every 100 people in the UK who develops DVT dies, with the cause usually being a pulmonary embolism. In the US, DVT affects up to two million Americans each year, and complications kill up to 200,000 people in the US annually - more than breast cancer and Aids combined.
