Annuity expectations

What are the main areas where annuity providers fail customers i.e. transfer times, communication? What progress has been made and what more can be done? I don't think that annuity providers do fail customers. Most of the issues around annuities, or more importantly the retirement processes, occur because of the poor understanding of how pensions operate.
