FTSE makes upbeat start

In the UK, the FTSE 100 Index is marginally higher this morning adding about 12 points to 5012.70 points.

The benchmark is trading on solid gains made by the Dow Jones last night and is led by Corus Group and Gallaher, the maker of Silk Cut cigarettes, up 1.25p to 58.75p and 17.50p to 854.50p respectively. BOC Group meanwhile, has shed 7p to 971p. In Japan, the Nikkei 225 Stock Average reached a seven-month high. Led by firms within the finance sector. The Tokyo benchmark added 0.7%, to 11,553.56 at its close early this morning. Sumitomo Mitsui advanced 2.7% to 717,000 yen, while Daiwa Securities added 5.3% to 740 yen, amid speculation of a merger between the two, possibly sparking off ...
