FTSE mapping out new territory

The FTSE 100 index has started like a rocket this morning adding about 33 points to 5145.40, as it looks to reach new record levels.

Emap leads the UK benchmark, adding 17.5p to 795.5p, after a stock upgrade, while hotel chain, Hilton Group picked up 5.75p to 292p, after putting 16 of its UK hotels up for sale in a bid to raise £300m. Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Group, meanwhile, has shed 0.5p to 83.25p, along with mobile group O2, down 0.75p to 135.5p, after rejecting takeover talks with Deutsche Telekom. In Japan, the Nikkei 225 Stock Average added 0.4% to 11,630.13 at its close in Tokyo early this morning, representing a six-week gain and its longest winning streak since September 2003.
