Rip-roaring week leaves FTSE above 4,700

Another day, another record as the FTSE gained 11.5 points to close at 4,739.80 as the pace of US economic recovery was again strengthened by further macro-economic news.

British Airways gained 8.25p to 223.75p as investors bet the company will report quarterly profits surged by more than 30% when the next figures come out on Monday. BT closed up 4.25p at 192.75p after analysts at Citygroup raised their recommendation to ‘buy’. Reports suggest sales of broadband telecoms services are taking off in the UK. Xstrata, the coal miner, gained 11.5p to 881p as the part-owner of South Africa’s biggest, and the world’s second biggest coal export terminal benefited from figures suggesting no letup in global coal demand.
